Biography

Recorded and witnessed as his son by Sir Robert de Lawedre of The Bass in the charter to Glasgow Cathedral dated 1st August 1414.[1]

James de Lawedre, with Robert de Lawedre [either his father or brother], and Thomas de Lawedre - Canon of Dunbar, witnessed a confirmation by William de Lawedre, Bishop of Glasgow, of the Papal Dispensation by Pope Benedict XIII dated 11 Dec 1413, for the marriage of William de Douglas, Earl of Angus, and Margaret, daughter of Sir William de Hay, the elder, Knt., who were related in the fourth degree of consanguinity. Dated and signed at Yester Castle, Haddingtonshire, 6th January 1414/15.[2]

There is a safe-conduct warrant, number 941 dated 13th December 1423, which includes "James de Lawedre de Scotia" in the party of the Earl of Angus, Hepburn of Hailes, Hay of Yester, etc., to go to Durham into the presence of the King of Scotland [James 1st]; and in number 942 dated 3rd February 1424 another safe-conduct includes James de Lawedre of Scotland with four attendants as one of those in the delegation including the Earl of Leven, Sir Robert de Lawedre of The Bass, Knt., Duncan Campbell of Argyll, Wiliam Borthwick, Lord of Heriot, Alexander de Ramsay, Lord of Dalhousie, and innumerable others, going to Durham as hostages for King James 1st.[3]

In 1425 Sir Robert de Lawedre of The Bass was made Justiciar of Scotland, with his brother James de Lawedre as Justice-clerk ex parte australi aque de Forth.[4] James de Lawedre appeared in parliament at Perth on 1st March 1429 as legal Procurator for Philip de Mowbray.[5] James de Lawedre "a noble squire and bailie of all the lands of Dalmeny" presided at a Retour for Philip de Mowbray, Lord of Dalmeny, done at the latter place on 8th November 1430. [One of the many witnesses was Hector Lauder, presumably James's nephew.][6]

"The late James de Lawedre" and Archibald, Earl of Douglas, of Smailholme, St.Andrew's diocese, gave, granted and confirmed to the Abbot and covent of St. Mary of Dryburgh the hospitals of Lauder and of Smailholm, of which they were Patrons, with all lands, tenements etc. A Supplication to Rome to confirm this was made 7th August 1432.[7]

Spouse and issue, of any, unknown.
